Geography of Dwarka

The city of Dwarka derives its name from a sansjir word Dwar which means door. This sacred city is located in the Jamnagar district in Gujarat. It is situated in the western most part of India at 22.23A N 68.97A E. It is situated on the right bank of Gamut creek. Ahmadabad is situated at a distance of 444km from Dwarka. Before the relocation of the districts, it constituted a part of the Jamnagar district. Some of the nearby places in Dwarka that you can visit are Rukmini Devi Temple and Shankhoddar Island. Shankhoddar Island is situated at a distance of 32kms from Dwarka. This island is known to be the place where lord Krishna resided with his family.

The Rukmini Devi Temple is an architectural masterpiece of the 12th century and located at a distance of 1.5km north of the town. The temple has been dedicated to wife of Lord Krishna and has been beautifully decorated with intricately carved walls and beautiful paintings. Bet Dwarka is a small sized island that is very close to Dwarka. You can find plenty of ancient temples here. You can enjoy the extensive beach with water plants and animals on the east of the island.

Winters are pleasant, dry and mild with daytime temperatures around 29 degrees centigrade. The days are sunny and nights clear. Summers are very dry and hot with temperatures around 46 degrees centigrade. At night the temperature comes down to 34 degree centigrade. The time just before the monsoons has a similar weather with high humidity. The onset of monsoon brings in a lot of respite and it starts around middle of June. Temperatures during the day time remains low at around 38 degree centigrade with high humidity. At nights the temperature stays around 80 degree centigrade. The winter season extends from October to March and is the best time to travel to Dwarka.

Dwarka has a population of about 40,863. About 53% of the population is constituted by the male and 47% by the female. The average literacy rate of Dwarka is 64%, which is much higher than the average national rate, 59.5%. The female literacy rate is 55%.  About 13% of the population is under the age of six.

Dwarka is mainly dominated by the Ahir community. Ahir is an Indian ethnic group that identities themselves as part of the Yadav community. Many describe them as a community, caste, clan, a tribe or a race. The major groups in their social structure are Gwalvanshi, Nandvanshi, Yaduvanshi. Cow herding is their main occupation. They are known by different names such as Gaddi, Ghosi and Gavli. Ahirs were one of the militant groups of Hindu, including the modern times.
